We are excited to announce the newest addition to the Pete du Pont Freedom Foundation team—Jonathan Barnes, who recently joined us as the Client Success Manager and Strategist. Jonathan brings a wealth of experience as a Corporate Communications and Public Affairs executive, with a proven track record of cultivating key partnerships and designing community engagement strategies.
Throughout his career, Jonathan has successfully managed public relations, community relations, and diversity initiatives, making him a perfect fit for our work within the Equitable Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (E3). In his new role, Jonathan will provide invaluable support to small business owners and entrepreneurs, helping them enhance their current operations, assess their growth needs, and develop strategies to overcome challenges. His expertise will guide them toward the right resources to foster their success.
Additionally, Jonathan will spearhead the development of our referral network, establishing partnerships with key service providers to better support our members. His work will also focus on identifying opportunities for the expansion of existing businesses within the E3 network.
We recently sat down with Jonathan to learn more about his background and what drives him in his work. Here’s a glimpse into our conversation:
What led you to your current career?
I started my career in Public Relations 25+ years ago at a boutique PR agency in Atlanta, GA. I specialized in media relations and implemented strategic marketing campaigns for national brands, working with organizations like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Porsche Cars North America, and Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. I secured international recognition across various media outlets, including Oprah, Good Morning America, and CNN.
For the last 11 years, I’ve worked for a large national staffing agency headquartered in Newark, Delaware, where I led public relations, charitable giving, and supplier diversity initiatives across the country.
What are you most passionate about in your work?
As a native-born Delawarean, I’m passionate about helping our local communities thrive and grow. I’ve dedicated over 10 years to volunteering on boards throughout Delaware, assisting students and emerging businesses. I even launched a corporate supplier diversity program at one of the largest diverse-owned staffing agencies in the U.S.
Can you share a project or accomplishment that you’re particularly proud of?
I’m most proud of establishing a national partnership with Jobs for America’s Graduates, a nonprofit helping at-risk youth graduate from high school and succeed in their careers. Fun fact: Governor Pete du Pont founded Jobs for Delaware Graduates, which grew into this national program!
What are your goals in this role, and how can we support you?
I’d love to look back in a year and see that I helped grow and expand the regional footprint of our E3 program. I appreciate having Stephanie and Lynn as my “rocks of support” in achieving this.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I’m passionate about thoroughbred horse racing and breeding—something I’ve loved since I was 12. I’ve been fortunate to own a few horses over the years.
What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I was an extra in Dead Poets Society, filmed in Delaware in 1988-89. I worked on the film for over two months and got to meet Robin Williams and Ethan Hawke. You can even spot me in the movie a few times!
What motivates you to come to work every day?
Success and great experiences. I’m driven by building meaningful relationships and positively impacting our local communities and businesses.
We are thrilled to have Jonathan on board and look forward to seeing the incredible work he’ll do in our community!
